As the six-day New York Fashion Week (NYFW) period begins this week. The fashion industry will be focusing its attention on New York. Snow Xue Gao will open the event with a live runway show on February 11 and close it on February 16 with a performance by The Blonds.
Activations for emerging designers, industry discussions, and immersive exhibitions will also be featured at this year’s NYFW in addition to the usual mix of physical and digital presentations.
There are a number of noteworthy events and people to keep an eye on this week, all of which have been highlighted by FashionUnited.
Emerging and returning
Many well-known designers, including Michael Kors and Private Policy, will be taking to the runway in person despite covid measures, each accompanying their show with a livestream. In contrast, Coach, Gabriela Heart, and Carolina Herrera have decided to stick with runway-only presentations for their AW15 collections.
The schedule also includes the return of Area and Dion Lee, both of whom took a short hiatus from the event due to the pandemic. Area, on the other hand, will make a digital presentation before returning to the actual runway.
Emerging designers, including knitwear specialist Judy Turner, Parsons alum Luchen, fluid fashion label Melke, and contemporary design house Saint Sintra, will be an exciting addition to this season’s schedule.
In the Blk, a group that promotes diversity in the fashion industry, will be hosting an event showcasing the work of emerging black designers in the industry. On February 13th, UPS and three designers will launch a clothing and merchandise collection to promote their services. In the Blk will receive a portion of the sales proceeds to help further its mission to elevate black-owned fashion brands.
Cancellations and no-shows
Despite the packed schedule, NYFW has had its share of cancellations, including one of the event’s regulars, Tom Ford. The New York designer cancelled his physical show in January, opting for a digital presentation and citing the omicron variant’s concerns. As a result of covid-related logistics issues and his current involvement in the Met Museum exhibit, Thom Browne postponed his show to April 29.
Other notable absences from the schedule included fashion week regular Monse and design duo Rodarte. Instead, Afterpay, a multi-year NYFW: The Shows partner, will feature the Californian fashion label. During fashion week, The Rodarte Experience will be at Spring Studios, bringing the work of the brand’s founders Kate and Laura Mulleavy to life. At The Art of Rodarte presentation, they will talk about the label and their personal experiences.
The digital world remains
As expected, digital will continue to play a major role in NYFW and its events. While many physical shows are still planned, digital activations, livestreams, and presentations will be a big part of the upcoming event. Along with the emerging designers who are leading the way in digital-only projects, returning creatives will be pushing the boundaries.
New York Fashion Week regulars 11 Honoré and Sergio Hudson will use Afterpay’s ‘See Now, Buy Now’ feature in their live shows. Each show will be streamed live on Afterpay’s NFYW hub, allowing consumers to shop the collections right from the runway.
The week’s schedule continues to grow with new events. The Black in Fashion Council has announced the return of its Discovery Showroom, which will give emerging black designers like Ashya, Keama, and Ndigo Studio a platform.
Aside from shows, NYFW The Talks will host industry panels at the show’s home Spring Studios. The future of fashion commerce, fashion in the metaverse, and second life style will be covered.
The pandemic continues to impede the possibility of ‘normal’ operations, with the CFDA following New York State health guidelines. Attendees at live events must show proof of covid-19 vaccination and wear a mask indoors. Reduced guest counts and extra space will also be implemented to maintain social distance.
The CFDA’s latest announcement emphasized the importance of safety regulations during the event. To ensure everyone’s safety, it is strongly advised that everyone attends regular rapid testing.
