Platform boots have preserved somewhat of a cult status over recent years after making their debut in the business in the 60s and 70s, where they were worn by the likes of David Bowie, Kiss and other rock artists from decades past. Much of the boot style’s present rebirth is attributable to, in part, the rise of the ‘gothcore’ movement, a subgroup of Gen Z’s favourite Y2K trend. This post-punk fashion approach has been widely adopted by the younger generation, as they routinely attempt to reassemble trends from the past to satisfy their own desires. Typically a platform varies from three centimetres and up, created as a simple sole addition that will provide a little of grunge to any outfit. While some of the variations of the trend can be very dramatic, with over-the-top heights and flashy embellishments, others take on a more toned down approach, with the platform merely employed to provide a bit of an edge to a classic black ankle boot.

Platform boots’ resurgence has been impacted by several elements, all of which are largely driven by young people’s interest in retro fashions. Influential Gen Z celebs including Olivia Rodrigo, Dua Lipa, and Bella Hadid have all been photographed wearing the shoes, which has undoubtedly contributed to their current appeal. Young, fashion-forward consumers who are looking to express themselves through their wardrobes are greatly influenced by these ladies in the public eye. Rather than the typical ankle boot, the platform provides a more daring footwear option that is nevertheless worn and practical. For the most part, it is a style that returns year after year, either as a high-end shoe fad or as a Dr Marten-esque streetwear aesthetic.

Last year, Rick Owens brought the platform boot back into the spotlight with his SS22 collection, which featured platform boots reimagined as chelsea boots and thigh-high strappy styles. There is no doubt that clunky boots are a must-have for the next winter season. Balmain’s AW22 runway featured sky-high soles that gave the platform a whole new meaning. The exaggerated platform of the ankle boots added an unexpected twist to the ensemble, which was otherwise simple in color and style. Funky ankle boots with buckle features and linear designs were on display at Gucci’s retro-chic show for AW22 that made a sensation due to the fashion house’s surprise collaboration with Adidas. In contrast to the traditional 1970’s boot styles, the use of a reflective material, a tribute to glam rock fashion, accentuated the platform’s extraordinary height. This approach was taken by Altuzarra as well, which presented a simplified ankle boot shape with platform sandals, demonstrating the brand’s dedication to a more elevated style.

You can wear this style with dresses and fitted suits, providing a more informal option to other footwear. When it comes to the platform boot trend, a co-ord suit is a great option because it can be worn in the office as well as in more formal settings. This boot silhouette also looks great with flowy skirts, whether they’re made of satin or another light material. Adding an oversized sweater to the design makes it versatile enough to be worn on a regular basis. Grunge up your chunky knits this season with a knit dress or a jeans and sweater ensemble; both look great with the grungy touch. However, if you’re going for a full-on grunge look, an all-black ensemble is the way to go. For a more edgy appearance, use the platforms with dark skinny jeans and an oversized blazer.

Another retro-inspired style, the platform boot, has made a comeback as a top shoe trend for the current and upcoming seasons. Fashion trends and pop culture have made it a popular choice for younger consumers looking for an alternative to more traditional boot types.
