Green Carpet Fashion Awards (GCFA) were given out during an intimate dinner hosted by the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA). The awards were given out to those in the fashion and entertainment industries who are using their platforms to promote sustainable transformation.
The San Vincente Bungalows in California, where the event was hosted by humanitarian and environmental campaigner Livia Firth and activist Bethann Hardison, was the setting for the event.
In a speech at the event, Firth, who is the creative director of sustainable consultancy Eco-Age, said: “Fashion is a full spectrum industry running across the globe, touching billions of lives and reliant on a healthy biosphere. We must use that reach and power to bring purposeful change.”
According to Firth, “We also know that sustainability solutions are intersectional solutions, and that environmental justice is inextricably linked to social justice.” He went on to say that “The GCFA is concerned with all of this.”
Tom Ford, who also serves as chairman of the Consumer Federation of America, was awarded the GCFA Environmentally Restorative Award for his work on the Tom Ford Plastic Innovation Prize, which he co-founded with the Lonely Whale.
Aurora James, a fellow CFDA member, was awarded the GCFA Economically Inclusive Award, which recognized her efforts to drive economic transformation in the fashion industry in order to make it more fair. James is the founder of both Brother Vellies and the Fifteen Percent Pledge, both of which are dedicated to achieving this goal.
Bethany Yellowtail, the designer behind her namesake fashion label B.Yellowtail, was one of the recipients of the award, which she shared with another designer. Yellowtail’s work prioritizes Indigenous creators in the fashion industry, a decision that was applauded at the event.
Color Of Change, an online racial justice organization, was named the winner of the GCFA Socially Just Award for its efforts to challenge injustices across the United States of America.
“The CFDA is pleased to welcome the Green Carpet Awards to the United States,” said CFDA CEO Steven Kolb in a press release. “As an organization dedicated to social and environmental change within the industry, the Carpet and Rug Institute of America (CFDA) supports the Green Carpet Awards.” “We are inspired by the recipients’ excellent work and express our gratitude to them for advancing responsible and inclusive initiatives,” says the committee.
