Pearls are widely considered to be one of the most popular gemstones in the world. They can be either naturally occurring or cultured. Cultured pearls are the result of the intentional insertion of a bead or piece of tissue into a mollusk, which the mollusk then coats with nacre to form a pearl (mother of pearl).
For many years in the twentieth century, Coco Chanel was renowned for accessorizing with numerous strings of pearls. It was a look that Karl Lagerfeld adopted when he became the creative director of Chanel in 1983. Pearls have taken on a new attitude in recent seasons, and are frequently displayed in an unconventional manner or in contrast to the clothing they accessorize. During this season’s fashion shows, giant pearls took center stage in a number of looks.
Designer Riccardo Ticci accessorized with pearl jewelry, including chokers and cocktail rings, as a nod to the House’s founder, Hubert de Givenchy, and his designs for Audrey Hepburn. A pearl-embroidered pair of pants and an embellished dress with pearls were then displayed by him as a follow-up.
Necklaces with large white pearls interspersed with black pearls, statement pearl earrings, and cocktail rings were all featured at Versace’s show.
At Dolce & Gabbana, the duo used an oversized pearl necklace and bracelets in contrast to a hoodie with cartoon graphics created by Gianpiero D’Alessandro.
Undercover featured yet another look that was juxtaposed with the rest of the collection. An elegant suit was accessorized with gum ball earrings in a champagne color, this time in a formal style.
Jewels in two shapes, the gumball and the teardrop, were used to accessorize a black quilted coat worn by Simone Rocha. Pearl-embellished gloves and a mother-of-pearl wristlet clutch were also on display.
