What’s popular in the world of vintage shopping may be completely different from what’s popular in our 2022 wardrobes. With its newly released Year In Review for 2021, Thrilling, the online marketplace that stocks some of the best vintage shop finds from across the country, set out to discover this.
Brittany Cohen, Thrilling’s Senior Director of Fashion, that the report explains the differences between vintage and modern trends. In order to determine which vintage fashion trends dominated 2021 and which could dominate 2022, the team gathered data from the site’s 700 vintage stores, as well as search and sales performance.
Online statistics alone cannot predict the future of vintage shopping. Communication with their vast network of sellers and collectors as well as their social media community has also aided in their forecasting. Jefferson says they constantly receive feedback from people looking for unique items or specific trends. Our personal shoppers and DMs helped us figure out what people wanted. Ahead, Jefferson delves into Thrilling’s top five vintage fashion trends for 2022, and what everyone might be buying secondhand in the coming year. More below.
NO. 1: CHANEL REBOOT

With Chanel handbag prices rising and limited inventory, Jefferson sees shoppers turning to secondhand stores to score a bargain.
I don’t think people will stop shopping luxury, I think they’ll just find new ways to engage with it. We don’t know what’s going on with the supply chain, so goods are less available. People will look and shop luxury in new ways as production levels fall and prices rise. We can’t wait to see it. Our current top search is for Chanel.”
While getting a brand new Chanel item may be more difficult now, there are plenty of options if you know where to look. You might even get a good deal.
NO. 2: NEW AMERICANA

Corsets and bras as going-out tops has transformed the way we think of (and show off) lingerie, and Thrilling sees the potential of this category’s growth in the vintage space. “Shoppers are thinking of lingerie as a fashion choice, as kind of outerwear that you wear outside of your bedroom, per se,” says Jefferson. “The runways are also putting it back into the mainstream, so then people are more likely to be interested in looking for it.”
Thrilling predicts slip dresses, sheer and lace fabrics, lace-up garments will be big during the warmer months of the year. “Plus, a lot of the [lingerie] silhouettes that were around in the ‘50s, ‘60s, and ‘70s are coming back,” adds Jefferson.
NO. 3: DAY & NIGHT LINGERIE

It is predicted that slip dresses, sheer and lace fabrics, and lace-up garments will be big in the summer. “Plus, a lot of the lingerie silhouettes from the ‘50s, ‘60s, and ‘70s are returning,” Jefferson adds.
NO. 4: FRUIT BOWL COLORS

The term “Dopamine Dressing” has emerged as the antidote to our mostly-loungewear wardrobes over the past year, and this can be easily translated into a bright and punchy color palette with ease. It was even used by beige enthusiasts like Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen in their latest collection for The Row, which featured bright pops of color.)
“In the spring and summer, we’ll see a lot of warm neon colors, such as strawberry, lemon, lime, and tangerine,” says Jefferson of the forthcoming season. It was at the Valentino Spring 2022 Couture show that we saw our prediction come to life: “We expect to see vintage monochrome sets take center stage.”
NO. 5: ABSTRACT & PSYCHEDELIC PRINTS

Bright colors will become increasingly popular as people become more interested in abstract and psychedelic prints. This year, printed clothing is expected to account for more sales on Thrilling than it did in 2021. People were looking for the little black dress or another pair of jeans, but they weren’t looking for those things. Jefferson explains that they were looking for something that would attract attention. There will be a significant increase in the number of people who are seriously exploring this in a way that is extremely fun, extremely young, and extremely eccentric by 2022, according to the author. “I think it’s going to be a really exciting ride.”
This trend has already leaned heavily towards trippy prints, from party pants to ‘60s-era mod motifs, but most of it was coming from designer names and mainstream retailers. But savvy shoppers are starting to catch on it seems, going straight to the source to see what vintage sellers have to offer instead.
